Thel Thulāva (තෙල් තුලාව): Metallurgy, Ritual Geometry, and Dispensing Utility in Ancient Sri Lankan Medicine

Dr. Manel Hettiarachchi Department of Archaeology, University of Peradeniya 20 March 2024Ancient Ceylon Historical & Cultural Studies, Vol. 52, No. 1

Abstract

Archaeological analysis of antique Sri Lankan brass and bronze oil pourers (Thel Thulāva) demonstrates a unique integration of sacred metallurgy, artistic symbolism, and precise fluid dynamics. Originating in medieval royal pharmacies and monastic infirmaries, the vessel's elongated swan or dragon spout provided laminar oil flow essential for administering measured medicinal doses and temple ritual libations. This paper documents 42 museum specimens across Sri Lanka, tracing stylistic shifts from the Anuradhapura era to the Kandyan kingdom.
